First, do you really trust God? It is an important question to ponder before you decide how big the typeface should be on your public signage.

God spun the heavens and put the stars in their courses, so one could argue that public declarations of how much we trust God are not necessary. But here at InGodWeTrust dot Com, we say, ‘shut up with that nonsense‘. But really, do you trust God? 

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding” is what Proverbs says. But what if you like your own understanding? What if your own understanding tells you to be very afraid of people who don’t share your particular understanding of faith? In that case, please purchase our IN GOD WE TRUST purses, murses (man-purses), and fanny packs. Then when people point out that you seem more fearful than trusting, you can point to the way you accessorize and end the argument.

So truly, do you trust God? 

Joshua, who led God’s people to the Promised Land, after generations of slavery and forty years of wandering in the wilderness (which is almost the same as someone wishing you ‘Happy Holidays’, Karen), said, “I hereby command you: Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

When people start getting gay married, or listen to women preach, or want to make their own healthcare choices in consultation with their doctor and not with you, it can be frightening and dismaying. We think what Joshua meant when he said ‘be strong and courageous‘ is to be really loud and obnoxious about how not frightened and not dismayed you really are by people who don’t trust God quite as much as you do. Buy this laptop cover that might confuse the non-patriotic, non-trusting people into thinking it is actually the Flag you trust, and not God. Don’t let them tell you you’ve confused your faith with your patriotism again! Open up your laptop in any Starbucks and everyone will know your colors don’t bleed. (Or is it run? Whatever it is, your colors trust in God).

Are you a school district, a public school district? Some people may wonder why a public school district, committed to offering education to everyone, regardless of race, creed, or nationality would be wanting to talk about how much you trust God. But we say, ‘shout it from the cafeteria! Yell it on the playground! Write it on the walls in big block letters!’ Let people know, clearly, how not afraid of diversity you are. Rely on bold signage to reveal the boldness of your trust.

Speaking of cash.

In God We Trust is written all over our money. So let’s spread that around. Give it to the refugees seeking to rebuild their lives here in our country. Share it with your faith communities so they can live out their mission in your own neighborhood. Donate it to the homeless shelter in your town, trying to help people who need to trust in God because their own efforts haven’t quite panned out as they dreamed. (Here’s a link to Interfaith Shelter here in Boise). Use it to buy school supplies for kids who can’t afford them. Buy a drink for the person behind you in line at your favorite coffee shop, to show you trust God’s goodness is worth sharing with the world. Send flowers to a local abortion clinic, even if abortion is not what you’d choose, because you trust that God is with those women as much as God is with you, and maybe some flowers might give them comfort on a difficult day.

The book of Isaiah reminds us:

do not fear, for I am with you,
do not be afraid, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.
