Because of my work for the Covenant Network, I was interviewed this week about same gender marriage in the Presbyterian Church. I was happy to take the interview, when it was offered.
I confess I was a little ambivalent, though, about who wanted to interview me.
That’s right.
Cosmopolitan Magazine wanted to interview a female minister about same gender marriage now that the Presbyterian Church USA has just approved it.
Marshall McLuhan famously said, “the medium is the message”.
And now I’m featured in an article at Cosmo.com.
The article is listed below “18 Things You Should Know Before Dating a Cat Lady” and right above “Does Seafood Make Guys Horny“.
And yet, I’m proud of the article.
And because of the medium, because the article is at Cosmo.com instead of a Christian website, it was seen by people who wouldn’t have otherwise looked at it. The article has been shared over 800 times on social media (according to their tracker) which is a much broader audience than my writing would normally get. And so, despite headlines like “22 Shoes You Can Actually Dance Your Ass Off In“, which makes me weep, (weep I say!) about the double dangling prepositions, the good news of God’s mercy reached a different audience.
There is a lesson for the church in all of this, of course. If we save our message only for the people who walk through our doors, who will miss the message? How often does our distrust of other mediums keep us from using them to share the news of God’s love and mercy?

Oh yeah, thanks for the link to the seafood article, too. 🙂

Can’t say I’ve ever read Cosmo… But you are right. The good news of the kingdom is for everyone, not just those who find their way through the door Sunday morning. IMHO I think one good thing to come from the movement of church away from the center of culture will be the necessity to get out of the box (formed by the four walls of the sanctuary).

The cat lady article is also evangelism. So glad the two go together. 😉

Great article in Cosmo! So proud of ya. Did you see the very last comment as of 8:38 pm. (pretty sure it’s spam) about love advice and Dr. Shift. Hysterical.

You should read it. Really had nothing to do with your article. Completely spam but really funny. It was all about love advice and tips from Dr. Shifu.
